Dental 3D CT and scans: ask what each image is for
Dental cone-beam computed tomography, or CBCT, uses X-rays to reconstruct three-dimensional images. Implant planning is one of its clinical uses. The reason for the examination is the clinical information it provides, not simply that a practice owns a scanner. FDA: Dental CBCT.
The FDA advises using CBCT when it is necessary to obtain information that other imaging methods cannot provide. It also recommends considering earlier imaging to avoid unnecessary repeat examinations and choosing exposure settings appropriate to the patient and clinical question.
A “digital scan” is not a complete description
The terms on a clinic website can refer to different records. A 3D CT image, a photograph, a scan used for fabrication and a treatment simulation should not all be recorded as “the scan.” The useful questions are what was captured, why it was captured and how it is used in the proposed treatment.

A simulation represents a plan. It is not evidence that the procedure has already achieved the pictured outcome. Similarly, the presence of a laboratory or scanner is an operational fact; it does not supply a patient-level complication rate.
Keep an imaging history with the treatment record
Write the date, clinic and type of examination in your own file. If you change practices, tell the new team where earlier images were taken. This supports a conversation about existing records rather than assuming a repeat image is always needed or always avoidable.
The FDA notes that CBCT typically exposes a patient to more radiation than conventional dental X-rays, although less than other CT examinations. The appropriate comparison includes the diagnostic benefit as well as exposure. Children and young people need particular attention because radiation-related concerns are greater at younger ages.
