Reading implant outcomes: count patients, implants and follow-up separately
A percentage is useful only when its numerator, denominator and observation period are clear. Implant studies and clinic statements may count implants, patients, restorations or procedures. Those are not interchangeable units. This guide uses an invented arithmetic example to explain the difference; it reports no clinical success estimate.
One example, two denominators
Imagine 20 patients with 100 implants in total. Suppose five implants are lost, and those losses occur in four patients. At the stated observation point, 95 of 100 implants remain, while 16 of 20 patients have experienced no implant loss.

Both calculations can be correct in the same invented dataset. They answer different questions. Neither calculation establishes freedom from pain, repairs or other complications.
Define the outcome before comparing it
The FDA describes complications including screw loosening, infection, implant-body failure and difficulty cleaning. A statement about implants remaining in place does not explicitly report all those outcomes. FDA: Dental implants.
When reading a paper, find the authors' definition of each outcome. “Success” should not be assumed to have the same definition in every source. Record follow-up duration and how many participants were actually observed at that point. A long calendar period since a clinic opened is not the follow-up duration of every treated patient.

Procedure volume is a separate fact
A practice's cumulative implant count describes reported activity. It does not supply the denominator, follow-up and outcomes needed for a success calculation. The same applies to a review count: it counts published reviews, not necessarily individual implant patients followed clinically.
Read implant materials for another common category error: applying a claim about a component to an entire treatment. The treatment record keeps an individual's documented procedures distinct from general statistics.
